Made up of a knowledgeable team of locals and expatriates, our Expanish staff members work together to provide the best program possible for each of our students in Buenos Aires. Each member of our international staff adds a new perspective that keeps our programs fresh and effective; the Expanish team speaks a variety of languages and hails from all over Latin America, North America, and Europe.

Furthermore our Expanish language school boasts some of the best and most highly qualified professors of any Spanish language school in Buenos Aires. The teachers are all friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic about teaching Spanish and have university backgrounds in languages or education. Each has years of experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language, so students can expect to receive lots of focused and specialized attention from their teachers.

Luciana Gallego – School Director
Background

My professional story began in airline customer service at the Buenos Aires International Airport, where I had the opportunity to frequently travel, work extensively in client service, and learn about other cultures and people. Every time I came to a new destination I asked myself: is there a better way to learn? After many years of studies at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, I received a degree in Education; besides academic knowledge, those years where formative in my development of deciding what is important from a class. I believe that education is not just instruction, but an experience of the senses, which has enabled us to offer our Expanish students a living experience, not just language courses.

Background

Born in Barcelona, Spain, I moved to the United States when I was three and grew up in the forested state of Oregon, where my love for the outdoors began. I headed off to college in Los Angeles where I studied psychology and anthropology at the University of Southern California, and afterwards went on for my M.A. at the University of Chicago. I have worked in the field of education at various levels, along with extensive experience in the academic research sector. In college, I studied abroad in Madrid and explored western Europe, and I currently call the enchanting city of Buenos Aires home amidst my South American adventures.

Background

I was born in Australia but I have lived in the United Kingdom since I was very young. I studied Business & Finance in university, which lead me to working for a medical insurance company for 5 years in the Sales & Marketing department. I took a career break and spent 6 months working on the Greek island of Zakythos as a holiday representative for tourists before returning to the UK to work in Sales & Marketing again for a distributor and installer of big screen televisions and plasmas in bars & clubs. I was in need of another career break and took myself off backpacking around Latin America. I have now been living in Buenos Aires for 1 1/2 years.

Natalia Bauer – Activities Coordinator
Background

Half Argentine and half French but born and raised in Buenos Aires, I am what you would call a real “porteña”. I have lived in Buenos Aires almost all my life, except for six months after finishing High School that I spent in Puerto Vallarta, México, where I worked selling colour changing products! When I came back to Buenos Aires, I became a teacher and worked in an elementary school for four years. I’ve also worked as a Spanish teacher for foreigners. At the same time, I studied Educational Science at the University of Buenos Aires.

María Giorello – Student & Program Coordination
Background

My name is Maria and I consider myself to be from all over, so when someone asks me where I am from, I never know how to answer them! I have lived in Los Toldos, where Eva Perón was born; in Catamarca, in the north of Argentina; in San Pedro, and most recently in Chivilcoy. For the last six years I have been living in Buenos Aires while I studying Communication at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. I have helped coordinate our students since Expanish’s inception several years ago. Where will you find me in the next few years? Who knows…

Why I work for Expanish

I work at Expanish because I enjoy the interpersonal contact and above all, contact with people from around the world. Each week I get to know a new student, and the routine normal to any job simply doesn’t exist at Expanish. Through exchanges of experiences and stories, students get to know my culture, my customs, and through them, I can “travel” and get to know their countries. Many of our students have now become some of my closest friends.

Mary Foley – Student Advisor
Background

I grew up in the suburbs and city of sweet home Chicago, where my interests in languages, arts, education and business were kindled and fueled. My formal education culminated with a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Spanish and Dance and I’ve been lucky enough to try my hand at myriad occupations along the way: most notably as a customer service manager for an organic food market and a professional Tango and Flamenco dancer. Buenos Aires has been home for about a year now and I learn something new about this city and myself every day that I’m here!

Born and raised in Merlo about 30 km from Buenos Aires, I started traveling with my handball team around Argentina and Brazil at the age of 15. Ever since then I have always had my backpack ready to leave at a moment’s notice. After my high school graduation, I worked in a construction company in administration and finances, while studying law to be a Notary at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, where I hope to graduate in July 2007. I joined Expanish in order to help connect people with different cultural experiences, and help them realize how Argentine people live. I believe that traveling and learning about different cultures can help us to grow and really enjoy life.

Born somewhere and raised everywhere, I finally found my perfect home in “mi Buenos Aires querido”. I’ve been living here in Buenos Aires for the past 10 years and I am currently studying to be an Actuary at the Universidad of Buenos Aires, where I also work at the library. In high school I went on an exchange program to the USA for a semester, where I got the chance to live with an American family and go to high school. There I improved my English and met people from all over the world, as well as travelling throughout the country. But I think what is most important to me when travelling is sharing the experience with all kinds of people, because I find it is the best way of learning and opening my mind.

I was born in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in a city called Castelar, where I grew up, went to high school, and my family still lives. I now live in Buenos Aires, a city I very much enjoy, where I work for a non-profit and am finishing up my studies in Communication Sciences at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. I really like to travel, and enjoy traveling for both work and pleasure. I think it is the best way to learn about other cultures, seeing what each place has to offer, talking with locals, seeing their customs, observing…but the best part is when one is traveling with really diverse people, and you learn about both yourself and about one other!!!

  • Part Two: A Review of Gualeguaychú - el Carnaval del País!

Taking in the other sights of Argentina while you learn Spanish in Buenos Aires is an absolute must! While there is never a lack of activities to take advantage of in Buenos Aires, there is no better way to immerse yourself in Argentine language and culture than seeing what life is like outside of the comforts of the capital city.

If you were to fall asleep on the three hour bus ride to Gualeguaychú, you would probably think you were waking up in another country once you arrived. The majority of this sleepy, riverside town looks antique, with dirt...
