This past January 2008, we here at Expanish developed a new Spanish course curriculum based on the Cervantes Institute guidelines, the largest organization in the world responsible for promoting the study and teaching of the Spanish language and culture, making Expanish one of the only schools in Buenos Aires to follow the prestigious Cervantes teaching method.

Named after the eminent Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, the Cervantes Institute is a world-wide non-profit organization that aims at promoting the study and use of Spanish universally. Created by the Spanish government in 1991, there are currently over 55 institutes in over twenty countries that teach Spanish according to the Cervantes curriculum. This auspicious curriculum improves the methods of Spanish education by creating a social, cultural and educational environment, and by engaging in the discovery of Latin American and Spanish cultures.

The Cervantes Institute offers examinations for the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE), the Spanish equivalent of the TOEFL exam, which is the only officially recognized certificate of fluency for non-native Spanish speakers. The institute proposes modules for different levels of Spanish speakers and it has proven itself to be successful in spreading the use of the Spanish language internationally.

Expanish is also a member of SEA (Association of Language Centers in Argentina) and one of the only Spanish language schools in Latin America to follow the accredited Spanish curriculum model of the Cervantes Institute. We are proud of these certifications and happy to ensure a very high-quality and satisfying study abroad experience in Buenos Aires!

Barrio Highlight: Microcentro

2296805580 876b17884c m Barrio Highlight: MicrocentroExpect a hustle and bustle atmosphere when visiting the downtown neighborhood of Microcentro.  As the city center of Buenos Aires, there is a constant feeling of urgency.  Originally, the Microcenter neighborhood was originally labeled San Nicolás, after the San Nicolás church constructed in 1773, but was demolished to make room for the expansion of 9 de Julio and its location is now occupied by the Buenos Aires Obelisk.

In terms of accessibility, Microcentro is in walking distance to important monuments such as Teatro Colon and Plaza de Mayo and is served by nearly all metro lines.  Plaza de Mayo´s allure extends to both its history or revolutions and architecture like the home of Argentina´s Government Casa Rosada, Municipal Cathedral, and the National Bank  Not far away from the Plaza del Mayo is the oldest cafe in Buenos Aires, Café Tortoni (below) which is also world renown for its tango shows.  Furthermore, streets like Florida or Lavalle are littered with convenient shopping and Avenida Corientes has some of the best theatre and nightlife in Buenos Aires.  However, visitors should be cautious of the belittling crowds and tourist appeal that detract from the neighborhood´s charm.

logo sea New National Accreditation at Expanish! If you’re looking for a vibrant educational and cultural experience, studying Spanish in Buenos Aires is the perfect fit.The energetic city, the welcoming people, the hypnotizing culture, and the melodic language are just the beginning of it…

But one main concern that most potential students have about studying abroad is the quality of the school and the education that they will receive, both in the classroom and immersed in the local culture. In 1993 here in Argentina, a group of educators banded together and formed an association called the Schools of English Association (SEA).SEA, which later incorporated all foreign language institutes in Argentina and became known as the “Asociación de Centros Idiomas”, successfully serves as a forum of common interests and ideas for language schools here in Argentina, while simultaneously acting as a support and security system for students studying abroad.

As a SEA accredited school, students who study Spanish in Buenos Aires at Expanish are ensured that our school meets quality educational standards and has a director and team of teachers who are professionals with degrees in education. An important aspect of SEA is the “Defensoria del Estudiante” program. This program allows students and schools alike to submit any suggestions, comments, or complaints directly to SEA.This constant feedback from students and language institutes helps SEA to regulate the quality of the certified schools, ensures an excellent educational experience for prospective students, and keeps the language schools updated on their students needs and wants.

Here at Expanish, we pride ourselves on the quality of the services that we offer to students studying Spanish abroad in Buenos Aires. We welcome you to let us make your experience studying Spanish in Buenos Aires an enriching and unforgettable one!

Activities3 Argentine Futbol

Try telling 50,000 + screaming fans at Boca Junior’s La Bombonera or River Plate’s El Monumental stadium that soccer is just a game and you will understand that soccer, futbol, in Argentina is more of a livelihood than a hobby! The Argentine futbol league, or Primera División Argentina, is ranked in the top five leagues in the world.Argentina also won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, a gold medal in 2004, and is home to such internationally recognized figures such as Diego Maradona and the up and coming superstar Lionel Messi.A season in the Primera División is set up as two separate single-round tournaments named the Apertura (August to December) and the Clausura (Feburary to to June.) Buenos Aires is also host to the Superclásico between Boca Junior and River Plate which is one of the fiercest rivalries in the soccer world. Since these two teams are the larger of 8 Buenos Aires Premiera División futbol clubs and consist of about 75% of all Argentina futbol fans, this rivalry is a much anticipated event and a must see for all sports fans.

Whenever attending a sporting event foreigners are advised to only take the money you will need for the day as well as to leave expensive electronics (cell phone and camera) at home as the crowd are known to be unruly and petty theft does occur.
