Cultural Classes 5, Argentina
Our supplementary Cultural Classes 5 are designed to help students learn Spanish while gaining an understanding of the culture of Buenos Aires, of Argentina and of Latin America as a whole. Designed to accompany Intensive Spanish 20 or Intensive Spanish 30, Cultural classes provide students with a more thorough immersion experience and a deeper knowledge and understanding of Latin American culture while practicing their Spanish in a different context.
Cultural classes by Expanish: Don’t be "just another tourist"!
What are cultural classes?
These are open, dynamic and relaxed classes that are designed to show you different aspects of our Argentine culture. The professors will share fun stories and anecdotes, unravel confusing local customs and open other mysteries of Buenos Aires, of Argentina and of Latin America in general. They really want to show students the real Argentina and share their favourite parts of Argentine culture, so the material will be related to national Argentine passions that the average visitor doesn’t get to experience. You will learn the local secrets that only the Argentines who are connected with what is happening in the city can teach you.
What topics are covered?
It might be easier to ask what topics aren’t covered! The topics include soccer, traditional food, immigration, politics, tango, local literature, being an Argentine, and any other subject that helps to explain us and our unique history. So for example, do you know what one desperate porteño-husband once did to make sure his wife would never cheat on him? Or has anyone ever told you that the first president of the famous Boca Juniors soccer club was only 15 years old? And did you ever wonder why all the buildings in San Telmo and Recoleta look so similar? Our cultural classes will answer all these questions and more!

Buenos Aires through Borges’ Lens
Perspectives of Buenos Aires from the lens of the great Argentine writer, Jorge Luis Borges.
You will enjoy seeing the ways in which Borges captures the everyday settings of the city and bases them off of a real and an imagined Europe.
You will feel Borges’ love-hate relationship with his city. “This city that I believed was my past is my future, my present; the years that I have lived in Europe are illusory, I was always (and will always be) in Buenos Aires.”
Discover the Buenos Aires that has been immortalized by Borges’ pen, like eternal snapshots.
BA is Legend
All of the neighborhoods in Buenos Aires have their own stories that have become legends over time, including the story of the taxi driver in Chacarita, the Door #12, and many more. Buenos Aires hides many secrets, and you will discover a new one in each of the BA is Legend classes.
The Story Behind the Tango
You will learn the TRUE history of tango, the origin that nobody really knows. You will realize what tango is truly all about. It is not just a style of music and dance but a way of life that has its own dark history. Let us show you the real beginnings of tango culture.
