Frequently Asked Questions

A list of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to studying Spanish in Argentina with our Spanish school

Course Faqs

1. How do I choose between the Spanish programs offered at Expanish?

Are Intensive Spanish classes are great for those who like to learn in a group atmosphere, practice with their peers, and want to study in an intensive setting. On the other hand, individual lessons would be suitable for those wanting to focus on a particular aspect of the language or who cannot devote 20 hours per week to Spanish. Ask our student advisors for more information regarding what Spanish program in Buenos Aires is best for you!

2. What level of Spanish language classes should I take?

Our levels are matched to the Spanish Curriculum of the Cervantes Institute and adhere to the Common European Framework for languages which distinguishes 6 different language levels.

All students will take a basic placement test upon registration for Spanish courses, sent via email by an Expanish staff member. They will then sit for a second placement exam on their first day this allows us to tailor classes to your level and assign you to a group class with students of the same level. Do not worry if you do not speak a word of Spanish - many of our students have no prior Spanish knowledge before they arrive. You will, however, be speaking Spanish in the classroom from your first day.

3. What qualifications do Spanish language teachers have?

All of our teachers are native Spanish speakers and have extensive prior experience teaching Spanish to foreigners. In addition to their professional credentials, teachers are chosen for their abilities to keep students entertained

4. What is the focus of the advanced classes?

Advanced Spanish classes focus on learning the finer points of grammar, such as uses of the subjunctive and idiomatic expressions, as well as conversational and written skills. Discussion topics vary according to student interests.

5. What is the average class size?

The average class size is made up of 6 students. We keep the class sizes small to ensure rapid language development.

6. Should I bring any materials to class?

We provide students with all necessary materials, including a notebook and pen on the first day of class! We also recommend that you consider keeping a pocket Spanish dictionary and a grammar reference book handy.

7. When are the class start dates?

Official start dates of all courses are every Monday (Business Spanish has specific start dates, please refer to the Business Spanish page for more info), unless there's a National Holiday. We realize that students cannot control flight abilities and that not everyone can meet these dates. If you will be starting on another date, it is possible to take additional private hours to catch up with the group courses.

8. How long is each Spanish group class?

Expanish Intensive Group course classes are 4 hours per day, Monday-Friday. They're oftentimes in the mornings, and include two breaks.

9. I would like to focus on business, health care, law, etc. Do you offer such programs?

Students wishing to have specialized classes have two options. You can either enroll in Private Lessons or Customized Content Course in order to focus on your specific area of interest. Your other option is to enroll in the Combined Course program and take group classes with supplemental private lessons in the afternoons.

Housing Faqs

1. Are the accommodations close to the school?

We place you as close as possible to your Spanish language school, and guarantee that you will be no further than 40 minutes away by public transport.

2. Do I need to book accommodation with my course?

No. You can book your Spanish courses without accommodation, however a local homestay or shared apartment is highly recommend for Spanish language practice.

3. May I begin my accommodation before my classes start?

Yes, you may begin your accommodation at any time. You are also able to stay in your accommodation after your course is over. As we want to find you the best match for your length of stay, we encourage students to register as early as possible to ensure availability.

4. What do you offer for accommodation?

We maintain a well-established network of high quality apartments and houses located in the some of the best neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. Decide between the independent dynamics of a shared apartment or the hospitality and cultural opportunities of a homestay. We can also recommend hostels and hotels. For more information, visit our accommodation in Buenos Aires page.

5. What is the difference between a homestay and shared apartment?

These two types of housing usually fit two different needs and student expectations. Students who stay in a homestay often want to live with a family and see the local customs and culture of the country played out on a daily basis (two daily meals included). Students who stay in a shared student apartment usually want to live with other young people and are looking for a greater level of independence. Both experiences, however, allow you to practice your Spanish skills on a regular basis, meet locals, and see local culture played out in a home environment

6. Can I find less expensive housing once I come?

Expanish does its absolute best to cut costs for students and keep our prices as close as possible to real rates within Buenos Aires. While you may be able to find your own housing once you come, you must keep in mind that prices are always higher for short-term renters (less than six months to one year), as well as for foreigners, as sub-letters have no access to credit checks or assurance that the renter will indeed keep up their end of the contract. Additionally all our housing options are fully furnished and include utilities, combining both costs into one price per week for our students. Bear in mind that we don't require a deposit.
