El Obelisco (The Obelisk)
Situated three blocks from Expanish is the famous landmark Obelisk. Built in 1936 in order to celebrate the founding of the city of Buenos Aires over 400 years before, this city monument sits at the crossroads of Avenida Corrientes, a principal thoroughfare of the city, and Avenida 9 de Julio, the widest avenue in the world. The Obelisk towers at a incredible 67 meters in height with base of 49 square meters, and is visible both day and night.
Avenida Florida
The famous Florida Street is one block from Expanish. One of the biggest pedestrian friendly shopping streets in the city, Florida is lined with shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and more. On the corner of Florida and Avenida Córdoba is the beautiful Galerías Pacífico Shopping Mall, where you can admire the ceiling mural in its centre, explore the cultural centre on the top level and shop in exclusive stores.
Avenida Corrientes
Expanish is situated two blocks from the "Broadway" of Buenos Aires, Avendia Corrientes. This Avenida is packed with theatres, cinemas, restaurants, Tango halls, and everything in between. If you are looking for a full-scale theatre production, you will find it here!
Plaza de Mayo
Expanish is only two blocks from Plaza de Mayo, the main square and political nucleus of Argentina. It is Buenos Aires's most famous plaza and the place where so many demonstrations, political speeches, and historical moments have taken place. Today, political movements continue to take place here, and it is where the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo (Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo), the mothers whose children disappeared during the Dirty War, meet every Thursday to remember and to remind the public of what happened only a few decades ago. The oval plaza has grassy boulevards and pathways, a mini-Obelisco, a statue of Manuel Belgrano, and is surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires, the May Pyramid, City Hall, and the Casa Rosada.
Casa Rosada (Pink House)
The very famous Casa Rosada has been a major symbol of Buenos Aires for decades, claiming international stardom after Evita's famous speech from the balcony, and is still the official seat of the executive branch of the Argentina Government. It can be found at the Plaza de Mayo.
The Recoleta Cemetary
Only a 15 minute walk from the Oblesico, this enormous graveyard is more like a small city for the departed. One of the biggest and most intricate graveyards in the world, this is a must see in Buenos Aires.
Teatro Colón
The impressive Teatro Colón is Buenos Aires's prize auditorium, built in 1857 and later going through several reconstruction projects, today is a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with room for almost 4,000 guests, and is considered one of the five best opera houses in the world in regards to acoustics. Teatro Colón has been under construction for the past 4 years and has only recently opened again in 2010.
Puerto Madero
The glamorous riverside Puerto Madero is one of the city's newest neighborhoods; once an old and worn-down industrial area, Puerto Madero today features a gorgeous river promenade, redesigned modern lofts, businesses, restaurants, and bars, all against a backdrop of sky high apartment buildings and first-rate hotels. It is within walking distance from our Spanish school.
San Telmo
One of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, San Telmo is a mix of old European buildings, cobblestone streets, and city churches combined with modern lofts, boutiques, bars and restaurants. This very bohemian neighborhood features some of the best antique and vintage shopping in the city, as well as one of the biggest outdoor markets every Sunday. San Telmo is within walking distance from Expanish.
Palermo
Chic Palermo, the city's largest neighborhood, is easily accessible by public transport. It is where the city’s largest green expanse, Bosques de Palermo (Palermo Woods) can be found. Enjoy a sunny weekend with the locals at the Bosques. You can hire a pedal or row boat to cruise the large artificial lake, have a picnic in the manicured gardens or bike ride/ jog the extensive tracks.
